The Psychology of Economic Decisions

Professor Ariely works at the intersection of psychology and economics – studying how people actually make decisions in contrast to how rationality dictates the way they ought to make decisions. He will be talking about how this research is relevant to promoting energy conservation and specifically, how the way in which consumption data is provided to consumers can affect their behavior.
A reception precedes the talk at 5pm.

We are very pleased to be hosting a visit by Dan Ariely on November 6th. New Jersey’s Energy Master Plan includes ambitious goals to reduce energy consumption by 2020 that rely in part on changing consumer behavior. Professor Ariely has a lab in which he has been experimenting with different ways to organize output data from electric meters that take advantage of the way in which we process information. One of our goals is to work with him to make it possible to test some of his ideas as NJ moves to monitor the results of all demand response initiatives through 2011 and implement the most effective mix of action steps to achieve a total peak demand reduction of 5700 MW by 2020.
