The CSP climate attidues survey final rpeort is now available. The report highlights findings of two surveys of New Jersey adults conducted by the Rutgers Initiative on Climate and Social Policy with funds provided by PSEG.
The Rutgers University Climate Change Study was designed to collect data on respondents’ beliefs and knowledge of the causes of climate change and what relation (if any) these might have to their energy consumption habits.
Among the key findings:
* 8 out of 10 New Jersey residents say they understand global warming at least fairly well. 3 in 5 say global warming is a proven fact caused by human activity. But belief in human caused climate change is not correlated with many energy saving actions, which should give pause to those planning education programs.
* 85 percent of respondents support some role for government in mitigating climate change, but these results fall dramatically when the actions specified could have a direct impact on the respondent. As New Jersey moves to implement regulations to reduce greenhouse gases, it would be valuable to understand better the contours of support for government action.
