I introduce a Grand Challenge for habitat science: predicting the impact of local human interventions on population productivity at basin scales. I then summarize two case-study extensions: 1. Individual movement. I fit a model of individual movement for Bering Sea Pacific cod. 2. Food habits: I introduce a detailed foraging process and apply this to bill loads for tufted puffins and DNA from wolf stomachs. Throughout, I emphasize that combining habitat and stock-assessment science will require integrating modelling, field, and laboratory research.Keywords: Habitat science, tagging, stomach contents

Bio(s): James Thorson works to improve collaboration between NOAA scientists conducting research regarding habitat, stock, ecosystem, and climate assessments, both at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center and nationally. To do so, he envisions and encourages cross-program research including process research (lab and field experiments), monitoring, and synthesis. In his own research, he also investigates spatio-temporal ecosystem dynamics, life-history theory, and statistical methods.
