Tuesday, November 16, 2021. 1:00 PM. Webinar: Managing Organizational Change for Transformational, Deep Decarbonization Initiatives on Campus. Marianne Jorgensen, Academics for Land Protection in New England; David Foster, Harvard University. Sponsored by Second Nature. Register here.
In a January 2021 executive order addressing the climate crisis, President Joe Biden committed the U.S. to an ambitious conservation goal: to protect 30 percent of U.S. land and coastal seas by 2030. That target, known as "30 by 30" is grounded in science. The 2030 initiative will advance three core objectives: conserve species, protect ecosystems and their human benefits including clean water and air, and climate mitigation; and provide access for all to healthy local food and resources. To advance these objectives all nations, regions, communities, business enterprises, and academic institutions must engage in action and in educating future generations. In this webinar, we will introduce the 30x30 initiative and its connection and importance to climate, environmental justice and human health and make the case for why and how academia should expand their current sustainability goals to include biodiversity goals. We call on institutions to pivot to an outward stance to engage in their communities, regions and nationally to be involved in land stewardship and conservation as natural climate solutions. We will articulate the importance of academia advancing biodiversity and land conservation together with their other sustainability goals.
