This session will review a recent nationwide study by Melissa Kreye examining forest owner willingness to enroll in forest carbon markets in the US. We will also discuss the impact of the “Forest Carbon Markets 101” series for landowners, which has been offered through Penn State Extension since 2019.
Speakers:
Melissa M. Kreye is an Assistant Professor of Forest Resources Management and Extension Specialist in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at Pennsylvania State University. In 2019 she launched the “Forest Benefits and Values” program to help build a better understanding of the social and economic value of conserved private forest lands. The “Forest Carbon Markets 101” series is a program that provides training to forest owners on forest carbon and carbon markets using direct instruction and expert panel discussions. Dr. Kreye is also a member of the Society of American Foresters and serves as co-director of the Economic and Policy Working Group.
Calvin Norman, is a Forestry and Wildlife Extension Education at Penn State. Calvin is a Wisconsin native, who moved to Pennsylvania after earning a Masters degree from Clemson University. At Clemson, he worked to develop improve management strategies for controlling Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera), a small invasive tree. He also worked as an industrial forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where he co-managed 10,000 acres of forest. Calvin got involved in carbon with the launch of carbon market programs in Pennsylvania, as forest landowners approached him with a number of questions about programs and understanding carbon markets. Calvin is a member of the Society of American Foresters and on the Silviculture and Economic and Policy Working Group.
