RCI affiliate Benjamin Horton discusses his new study about how extreme storms that once occurred once in seven generations are now occurring twice in a generation and could increase flood risk for New Jersey and New York in this NJ.com  and New York Times article.

RCI affiliate Lauren Feldman’s new study examines non-editorial news coverage in leading US newspapers as a source of ideological differences on climate change as well as evaluates how information about the threat of climate change and efficacy for actions to address it is communicated in major U.S. newspapers.Her study appears in the journal Public Understanding of Science. RCI affiliate Michael Kennish is editor and contributing author on newly released book Encyclopedia of Estuaries. RCI affiliate Judy Weis, is also a contributing author. EPA and USDA along with Private Sector organizations set the first ever U.S. goals to reduce food waste 50% by 2030. The news release discusses how wasted food can contribute to climate change through methane release in landfills while reducing food insecurity. To read more about this initiative, click here.

The United Nations has adopted 17 new development goals to be achieved by 2030. The majority of the goals relate either to sustainability, conservation or climate change. To read further about these goals, click here.

RCI affiliate Malin Pinsky is quoted in this New York Times article about warming oceans and its effect on marine life.

The United States Geological Survey has released a new Sea-Level Rise Handbook that highlights science and models for non-scientists. It is designed for land managers, coastal planers and policy makers in the United States, the handbook explains the contributing factors that account for sea-level change and models that can help inform decisions for adaptation to these changes. The National Academies Press has released Review of the Draft Interagency Report on the Impacts of Climate Change on Human Health in the United States. This book is intended to inform public health authorities, other planning and policy entities, and the general public about the potential impacts that climate change has on human health. NOAA Fisheries has released the NOAA Fisheries Climate Science Strategy. The Strategy includes information and tools to prepare for and respond to climate impacts on marine and coastal resources. One of the tools featured in this Strategy, OCEANADAPT, was developed by RCI affiliate Malin Pinsky. The full Strategy and its tools are available here.

Rutgers graduate student Julia Flagg (Department of Sociology) published an article in Environmental Sociology on countries that make the zero emissions pledge. Nature Climate Change has now made it the subject of their News and Views piece titled Alliances and Ambitions  pdf here (76 KB) .

The Department of Energy has released its second Quadrennial Technology Review (QTR) which examines the current status of clean energy technologies and identifies hundreds of clean energy research opportunities that could support the effort to modernize the power sector as a whole. In this New York Times article RCI affiliate Robert Kopp, comments on a new study that predicts large Antarctica ice melting if all fossil fuels are burned.

The Council of Energy Research and Education Leaders (CEREL) of the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) has released the report from the first National Energy Education Summit held in January 2015. This report lays out the vision for energy literacy of citizens and students from K-12 to undergraduate, graduate and professional education. Click here to read the full report.

A Strategic Vision for NSF Investments in Antarctic and Southern Ocean ResearchOcean Research has been released by the National Academy of Sciences. It offers a strategic vision to guide the U.S. Antarctic Program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) over the coming decade. Key priorities include an initiative to better understand how melting ice sheets could contribute to sea level rise; efforts to decode the genomes of organisms to understand how Antarctic ecosystems evolve and adapt to the extreme, changing environment; and studies of the Cosmic Microwave Background to address questions about the origin of the universe.
