The New Jersey State of the Climate Report summarizes annually updated scientific information on climate trends and projections that can be used by state and local decision-makers, researchers, hazard planning and climate resilience professionals, and residents. The New Jersey State of the Climate Report is developed by Rutgers University through its hosting of the New Jersey Climate Change Resource Center. The report provides end users with the information they need to monitor changing climate conditions to prepare for future impacts.
As documented in this report, through a NOAA national Project of Special Merit, researchers from Rutgers University have developed decision-support tools, resilience planning guidance, and training and policy options to advance efforts to address the needs of socially vulnerable populations as part of coastal climate resilience planning.
In 2016 Rutgers University convened a New Jersey Science and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) on Sea-Level Rise and Changing Coastal Storms on behalf of the New Jersey Climate Change Alliance to synthesize for practitioners the most recent climate science needed to inform efforts to increase the resilience of New Jersey’s people, places, and assets (including infrastructure, communities and natural resources) to regional sea-level rise (SLR), changing coastal storms and the resulting flood risk.

The New Jersey Climate Change Alliance (NJCAA) is a collective of organizations and individuals that share the goal of advancing science-informed climate change strategies and policy at the state and local levels in New Jersey.
The Alliance works towards this goal through:Leading collaborative demonstration projects; Assessing and presenting evidence-based state and local policy options; Conducting outreach and education to decision-makers, practitioners and the general public; Linking scientists to policy-makers and practitioners to inform policy and practice; and Developing tools and guidance that can be used by planners and decision-makers in the public, private and non-governmental sectors.
This report provides greenhouse gas emissions estimates for New Jersey for the years 2010. 2011, and 2012.
Researchers through the Rutgers Climate Institute and Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy undertook this research to fill a gap in reporting at the time it was conducted. New Jersey greenhouse gas emissions inventories prior to 2010 and after 2012 can be found here.
NJForestAdapt is a tool to assist in maintaining forest productivity, designed to inform forest stewardship and community forestry management plans, watershed protection, resiliency planning and adaptive management to climate change. Users can explore maps of forest carbon, pest and disease risk, forest health, current and projected temperature and precipitation, and anticipated changes in tree species throughout New Jersey.
This report explores policy options for the State of New Jersey to advance efforts to attain statewide greenhouse gas limits set 10 years ago by the Global Warming Response Act (N.J.S.A. 26:2C-37). The report examines five critical issues with respect to attainment of the statewide limits:Whether the limits are still appropriate, reflecting the the latest science; The status of New Jersey's current greenhouse gas emissions in relation to the statewide limits; Opportunities within New Jersey's legal and policy framework for addressing greenhouse gas emissions; Notable mitigation policies in other states that could be applicable to New Jersey; and Policy opportunities to advance sound climate change policies that address the needs populations and communities that are most impacted by changing climate conditions. The report was developed as a collaboration among research staff at The Georgetown Climate Center, Rutgers Climate Institute, Rutgers Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, and The World Resources Institute.
